J.C. Williams. Life in Camp: A History of the Nine Months' Service of the Fourteenth Vermont Regiment...Claremont, New Hampshire: Claremont Manufacturing Company, 1864. 8vo. Stamped: "E.F. Garvin. Essex Centre, Vt." to title page.
Penned by J.C. Williams, a veteran of the 14th Vermont Infantry, his book chronicled the history of the nine-month 14th Vermont Infantry between its organization in October 1862 and muster-out on 21 July 1863.
The Battle of Gettysburg, which the regiment played a critical role in during Pickett’s Charge, is described in detail. This intact example is ink inscribed to “E. F. Garvin” of Essex Center, Vermont; this is most likely private Evelyn F. Garvin who served in the 3rd Vermont Infantry between July 1861 and April 1862 before being discharged for disability.
Williams, the author himself, joined Company B in the 14th VT Infantry as a corporal in late October 1862. The following March he was reduced to private at his own request, transferred into Company K, and mustered out at Brattleboro, VT on 30 July 1863.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate, Veterans' Organizations, GAR, Grand Army of the Republic, UCV, United Confederate Veterans, Abraham Lincoln]
