Description
Lot of 14 and covers, including eight war dated letters and five from 1860, 1865-1871. The war dated letters include one partially printed letter sheet from the Ordnance Office War Department, dated Aug. 23 rd 1865 addressed to Lt. H.W. Freeman Co. D, 81 st U.S. Col. Infty. Laurence, Mass. Informing him that he that no returns of such property are due from him, signed Major R.W. Guinese, 8 x 10”. The remaining war letters are all dealing with Harwells attempt to get another commission after resigning from the Mass. 40 th Infantry, including one from a friend inquiring if he has had any success in getting an appointment, and another from Commonwealth of Massachusett Executive Department addressed to Rev. Frederick Freenman, Sandwich, Mass., from secretary of Gov. Andrew requesting information of the appointment of Hartwell over other candidates in line before him. Signed by A.G. Browne, Jr. Lieut. Col. Military Secy. The Freeman family were a very old and well connected family in Sadwich, Mass. Most of these post war letters are dealing with Hartwells attempts to get money owed him by the war department, others his search for a new position after the war. E April 3 rd 1860 letter is to his father Rev. Frederick Freeman telling him of a bad fall he had hat knocked him unconscious with a concussion that forced him to miss four days of school. He also write of dressing in blackface writing: Making a negro of myself is the only thing that I feel ashamed of. I know that I did wrong in dressing up as I did, though, I did not think of it as being wrong at the time and I am sorry that I did it… Form the sound of the letter Hartwell may have gotten drunk and dressed in black face, likely for a party and when he got home to his sisters house where he was staying while in school frightened the servants and was rude to his sister who wrote to their father about the incident. This lot also includes four war dated letters from Hartwell that have damp stains and are thus to faded to read without some scanning technology. Here are also seven covers, five war dates that could not be date matched to any letters. The Freeman family first arrived in Mass. In 1635, with Mr. Edmund Freeman, who with his wife Elizabeth was one of the original founder of the town of Sandwich, Mass. Condition as above else VG to VG+. From a group of letters found in a Kentucky estate.
