Description
Hard-to-find map from Samuel Augustus Mitchell's true first edition of his New Universal Atlas shows the first two railroads in Florida, the Tallahassee Railroad and the Lake Wimico and St. Joseph Canal and Railroad (railroad routes in red). Map was published when there were only five counties starting just south of modern-day Gainesville. Noted dates in Mosquito and Hernando Counties show where battles of the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) took place. The Second Seminole War was fought between the U. S. Government and the various tribes known collectively as the Seminole. Fought primarily in the peninsula of Florida, this war was the most significant of the three Seminole Wars, and the longest Indian War in U. S. history. Shows numerous forts, towns, villages, canals, lakes, rivers, swamps, islands, bays and other coastal features. Tables of existing water routes shown at top and bottom of map. Insets of Pensacola, Tallahassee and Harbour of St. Augustine. Excellent hand-coloring and good ink impression. Minor toning at edges, which is typical of Mitchell maps of this era. A desirable, elusive piece of cartographic history. 11.5 x 14.375
