Extremely scarce and desirable map of Mexico or “New Spain” from Mathew Carey’s rare 1816 General Atlas. One of the earliest maps of Mexico published in America. Shows “Provincia Texas” over twenty years before The Alamo and thirty years before the territory achieved statehood. The northern boundary of Mexico as shown here extended well north of Santa Fe, while the eastern border is located at the Sabine River–a boundary which was to moved west by the treaty accords following the 1819 War between Spain and the United States. Themap extends North to Lake Timpanagos and covers most of Colorado and New Mexico, as well as providing details in Texas, including the naming of Bejax, Cibola and Galveston Bay. One of the earliest examples of added color in an American atlas. The early Carey atlases are at the genesis of American map publishing. He devised a system utilizing the best cartographers, printers, hand colorists and the like that set the pattern for American map publishing, which was emulated by Melish, Tanner and others. This example comes from a variation of his 1816 General Atlas (see title page photo) made up from the same maps appearing in the 1814 atlas.
