Extremely scarce 1845 C. S. Williams map of the Republic of Texas from a true first edition of Mitchell's 1846 New Universal Atlas, showing the Carey & Hart decorative borders, which are not found in all other Mitchell atlases. Mitchell published two editions of his 1846 atlas, the one this map appeared in and another one later that year with new border designs on the maps. This atlas is important in American printing history as it was the first American atlas to be converted from engraved map plates to lithographic map plates--greatly reducing the cost of production--making the book widely affordable by the general public. Since Texas achieved statehood a couple of days before the beginning of 1846, this map is officially of the Republic of Texas. About 40 counties are shown and separately hand colored, although the western two thirds of the Republic is dominated by Bexar, Milam, Robertson and San Patricio Counties. Fort Alamo is shown, along with a few dozen other place names. About fifteen early roads are shown. Large inset shows Texas North of the Red River. A terrific map of the Republic, which was first issued in 1845, shortly before Tanner sold the rights to the Atlas to Mitchell. An extremely nice map with crisp impression and vivid coloring.
