True first edition of this scarce early map of Wisconsin, issued 10 years after it first became a territory. From the true first edition of Mitchell's 1846 New Universal Atlas, the only atlas he produced with maps showing Carey & Hart decorative borders that were also on Henry Tanner maps. The borders on this map are different than all other Mitchell maps, including ones from his second 1846 edition published later in the year. On this map, lands south of the Wisconsin and Fox Rivers are largely surveyed and many early counties and towns appear. The northern region is mostly St. Croix and Crawford Counties, which had been the lands of the Winnebagos, Menomonies, Oneidas, Sioux and Chippewa. Massive Carver claim remains, now nearly 100 years old. The south part of the territory is filled with roads, towns, the north rivers, portages, etc. One of the best early maps of Wisconsin in full original hand coloring. Few tiny spots of light foxing at lower right just inside the frame (does not go into map image). Couple of light, inconsequential spots; mild toning at edges. Nice ink impression.
