Description
One of the most influential early maps of Ohio and the first large format map of Ohio to appear in an atlas. This 1816 example is the identical map that appeared in Carey’s 1814 General Atlas. The map is illustrated as Plate VII in Smith's Mapping of Ohio with several pages of discussion. Carey spent two paragraphs in the introductory notes to the 1814 edition of his atlas discussing this map. Shows large area marked “Indian Land.” Shows Fort Laurence (sic) at southwest corner of Columbia Co. Columbia is actually Columbiana. Fort Laurens was the only Revolutionary War era fort built in Ohio. ‘Indian Line” runs across the top of the western counties and up through Columbia, Trumbull and Geauga Counties. Shows forts and the site of what would become known as The Battle of Fallen Timbers where Gen. Anthony Wayne defeated the native American tribes to open up settlement to the West. Shows boundary line going into Indiana Territory established by the Treaty of Greenville. Shows Cayahega Indian settlement where Akron will be founded in 1825. Engraved by Samuel Lewis, Smith notes that the map is one of the first to depict the early counties of Ohio (23) and contains many interesting inaccuracies, Deerfield County (located above Hamilton & Clermont), never existed. Gallia County is Galipolis. Carey's General Atlas published in 1814 was the first American Atlas to be offered for sale with hand coloring on the maps. Wide margins. Small bit of offsetting at top of map. 14.5 x 13.75
