Description

Important and rare true first edition example of map of North America by S. Augustus Mitchell and H. N. Burroughs. Texas is shown in its largest appearance, extending north to the Arkansas River and west to the Rio Grande, and taking in parts of present-day New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. Oregon Territory is shown extending up all the way to Alaska. This is a rare transitional map produced by the enigmatic H. N. Burroughs, who has placed his name on the 1836 copyright. All other versions-even other first edition examples-have the copyright date as 1846. Contains the Carey & Hart decorative border only seen in the true first edition of Mitchell's 1846 New Universal Atlas. Nice original hand-coloring and a strong and clear ink impression. A real treasure. Mild toning to edges. Two short horizontal pencil lines in mid-Mexico. 12.75 x 15.375
