Description
[JANSSON, JAN]. Virginiae partis australis et Floridae partis orientalis, interjacentiumq, regionum Nova Descriptio. Amsterdam: Blaeu, circa 1640. Second state (left cherub with tail, the latiude lines "blacked in" at right and the longitude corrected to 298,299, 300). Engraved map with hand-coloring. Neat lines 15 1/8 x 19 3/4 inches (38.5 x 50 cm). Edgewear, including short tears and chips, toned, lightly soiled, verso with contemporary atlas marker in ink, offset of modern lettering to verso.
Published nearly simultaneously with the identical Blaeu map, this is the Jansson issue of this updated map of the Chesapeake region. Burden notes this is "a marked improvement on the Hondius map of 1606 from which this was largely derived." Burden 253.
