Description

DNA Pioneers Wilkins & Kornberg Signed Archive- ALS, Reprinted Publications

An archive of four items relating to Nobel prize laureates Maurice Wilkins and Arthur Kornberg, including (1) ALS, (2) signed illustrations, and (1) signed publication. The two were both recognized with Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine, Kornberg in 1959 and Wilkins in 1962, for their contributions to the study and understanding of DNA. Please see below and accompanying images for further information on contents. Exhibits varying degrees of handling marks and light creasing, else very good.

The lot includes:

1.) ALS, 1p on Kings College London letterhead, dated January 1, 1988, London, England. Signed "Maurice Wilkins" at conclusion, reading in full: "I am sorry to have been slow in replying to your letter about a DNA reprint. These are difficult to find and I sold one not long ago signed for £800. Possibly this seems too large a sum to you but if you are interested please let me know." Accompanied by original airmail postage.

2.) Maurice Wilkins signed DNA printed illustration, written in full as "Maurice H. F. Wilkins" and inscribed to a Massachusetts doctor. Accompanied by original airmail postage.

3.) Pair of two signed items from Arthur Kornberg, with both signatures appearing as "A Kornberg", including one printed illustration of DNA replication and one reprinted publication of the same name.

A notable biochemist, Arthur Kornberg (1918-2007) would become most known for the discovery of biological synthesis in DNA and RNA respectively, in particular the replication thereof. Maurice Wilkins (1916-2004), in contrast, was most notably associated with James Watson and Francis Crick in their discovery of the double helix model of DNA. As a former assistant to chemist Rosalind Franklin, Wilkins introduced the duo to the results of her experiment with x-ray diffracted DNA fibers. In turn, the recognition of both Kornberg and Wilkins as Nobel laureates thus solidified their lasting impact on the field of biochemistry and DNA research as a whole.

Dr. Alfred J. Kaiser (1919-2003), a physician and anesthesiologist, was a Harvard graduate who received a degree in Medicine as a general practitioner. After joining in the United States Army during World War II, he would settle in Hatfield, MA where he dutifully served the surrounding community for decades to come.
