Ernst Ruska Signed Copy of Angewandte Chemie ft. Article on Electron Microscope
A copy of the July 1987 issue of German/English scientific journal Angewandte Chemie, signed by physicist Ernst Ruska following his 1986 Nobel Prize win in Physics for his work in designing the first electron microscope. Ruska's article, entitled "The Development of the Electron Microscope and of Electron Microscopy" (pgs 595-605), was presented during his lecture that year and published in the journal alongside the work of fellow laureates Gerd Binning and Heinrich Rohrer. Signed and inscribed in German on page 595, "Herr Alfred J. Kaiser/ mit freundlichen [illegible]/ Ernst Ruska", with accompanying return address from the Max Planck Institute. Exhibits minor creasing at spine and cover, with light toning throughout. Else, very good with bold signature.
Ernst Ruska (1908-1988) was a German physicist most known for his contributions in designing the electron microscope, which he believed could provide a more detailed image of an object than one which utilized light. As a result in 1939, he became involved in creating the first commercially produced version of such a device. Later in his career, he would serve simultaneously as a director of the Fritz Haber Institute and a professor at the Technical University of Berlin, although it was not until 1986 that he was awarded for his achievements in electron optics with a Nobel Prize.
