The book of poems is described by the author as "the cosmic genesis of a cycle of Western Red Indian myth, designed both to combine the Indian versions of creation, myth and folk tales into one continuous cycle and carry them over to the White race with as much of the old method of thought, habit and life of the Indians saved as possible".
John Varian (1863-1931) was an Irish born poet and musician, an early member of the Temple of the People and a leader in the theosophist utopian community of Halcyon, California. He was a close friend of Ansel Adams, who took a portrait of the Varian and wrote a poem upon his death. Two of his sons founded Varian Associates, an early Silicon Valley firm.
