Description
A large carved wooden lidded vessel used to store ritual divination implements. The lidded container has a very well worn, washed honey colored surface suggesting years of ritual field use. The lid has been embellished with the face of Eshu, the Trickster God and three avian motifs carved in relief, the birds symbolizing Eshu's ability to take the prayers of the diviner into the heavens and the spirit world. The Vessel measures 18 inches across and 12 inches tall. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Provenance: A Private New Jersey collection.
