Scarce Cuban newspapers from shortly before the start of the Civil War in the United States. As that conflict was about to begin, in which the continuation or termination of slavery was to be determined, the practice of that peculiar institution was in full fruition in Cuba, as displayed in these periodicals. There are lists of slave for sale or rent, escaped slaves (listing race and color types), ship arrivals from and bound for New Orleans and other southern U.S. ports, news of the day, even winning lottery numbers.
