[Roger Brooke Taney 1777-1864] Appointed to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1836 and ruled until 1864. This ALS was written during his time as a lawyer in Frederick, Maryland in 1815 of money that is owed to his client. Judge Taney was the Chief Justice during the Dred Scott decision, which stated that since slaves were not citizens of the United States they could not expect protection from the federal government. Size: 8 1/8" x 13 1/4"Some toning, fold marks visible.
