North Africa, Morocco, Fez region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a lovely wheel-thrown bowl that is hand painted with tin-glazes in hues of saffron yellow, teal, maroon, umber, blue, green, and black on a beige ground. The vessel rests on a ring foot and the walls swell gently outward and up to the thick rim. The interior is glazed with the beige hue, and the exterior rim and shoulder are painted with the vibrant bands and registers of triangular lines and stylized floral motifs. This type of vessel may have been used a zlafa or soup bowl. Size: 8.3" W x 4" H (21.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition
Chips around rim and foot, with light encrustations within basin, and very light fading to pigment in scattered areas, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to lustrous pigment throughout. Old label beneath foot reads, "MADE IN MOROCO."
