A finely painted icon of the Mother of God of the Unburnt Thornbush. Egg tempera on wood panel. The Mother of God, is shown at center within a four-pointed blue star upon a red star. She holds the Christ Child on her left arm, and in her right is a ladder. In the four points of the red star are the symbols of the Four Evangelists: the winged man of Matthew, the eagle of Mark, the ox of Luke and the lion of John. In the blue star and in the petals against which the red and blue star are set, angels are depicted, representing the virtues and the elemental powers. This icon was popularly kept as a form of fire protection; having one, it was believed, would prevent your home from being consumed by fire. The title of a bush which burns and yet is not consumed alludes to the perpetual virginity of Mary. The image is identified by the inscription found towards the upper section within the image areas. Two family saints on the border: Sergi of Radonesh and St. Paraskeva. Overlaid with an ornate, silver-gilt repousse and chased oklad. Marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark "MF" in Cyrillic. Russian, 3rd quarter 19th century (icon), Moscow, Maksim Eudokimovitch Funtikov, 1889 (oklad). 27 x 22.5 cm.
