Description
Seven Egyptian glazed faience amulets
Late Period-Ptolemaic, circa 664-30 B.C.
Including a large lion amulet, the mane with incised details, recumbent on an integral base, with suspension loop at the back and tail swung over its haunches, 5.2cm long; a black glazed fragmentary amulet of Isis, 2.7cm; a lion-headed aegis in bright blue glaze, 3.5cm; a seated baboon, a seated monkey amulet; an amulet of Ptaichos, all 2.5cm, and a Ptolemiac Period green glazed figure of Harpocrates, 3.6cm (7)
Footnotes:
Provenance:
Property of a private collector, Edinburgh (1938-2021).
The lion amulet acquired from Eternal Egypt, London, 14 May 1994.
Naucratic amulet: acquired from Bernard C. Pickard, Dorset, March 1994.
Monkey amulet: acquired from John Cummings Ltd, Grantham Lincolnshire, December 1996, list no.A20.
Published:
Eternal Egypt, Catalogue 'Rameses' - Egyptian Antiquities, April 1994, no.38.
For a similar lion amulet from the Leo Mildenberg collection, see A. Kozloff (ed.), Animals in Ancient Art, Cleveland, 1981, p.65, no.52. This genre of amulet was likely apotropaic or protective in function. Carol Andrews suggests that these larger lion amulets may be related to a spell against snakes preserved on a Late Period papyrus: it requires the words be recited 'over a lion of glazed composition threaded to red linen' (Amulets of Ancient Egypt, London, 1994, p.64-5).
