Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A fabulous figural pendant that is mold-formed from faience depicting Khnum (also Khnemu), the ram-headed god of the Nile waters, procreation, and fertility. Khnum strides forward with his left leg presented, wears a shendyt skirt, and holds both arms to his sides; the dorsal pillar has a suspension hole drilled through the top. His ram-form head features a condensed snout, bulging eyes, and perky ears framed within the curves of 2 C-shaped horns. Also known as the "Divine Potter," Khnum was believed to have formed the first deities and humans by sculpting them out of clay from the Nile River before placing them within their mothers' wombs. Size: 0.57" W x 2.23" H (1.4 cm x 5.7 cm); 2.44" H (6.2 cm) on included custom stand.
