"Charles U. Gordon, Esq.,
115 Dearborn St.,
Chicago, Ill.
My dear Mr. Gordon:-
I am obliged to enclose my formal regret. I wish I could come, but it is just out of the question. You have no idea how I am pressed for time, and I doubt if I am able to accept even the conditional engagement I have made to go to Chicago.
Very sincerely yours,
Theodore Roosevelt"
