Lot of 3 Autographs. Signed Letters and a Partly-Printed Document Signed by the Tweed Ring Principles, Samuel Tilden, William Marcy Tweed, and William L. Marcy.
1. December 20, 1842-Dated, Samuel Tilden Autograph Letter Signed, "Samuel J. Tilden", 1.25 pages, 10" x 8", New York. To William Bouck, Governor of NY, offering his support for Nathaniel Pierce for Tobacco Inspector, in part: "...he discharged its active duties as deputy, until Whig intolerance sought to force his removal...". Letter is silked on the reverse, else fine.
2. September 28, 1863- Dated, William Marcy Tweed Partly-Printed Document Signed, "W.M. Tweed" as Supervisor of the NY County Substitute and Relief Committee, 3 pages, 7" x 8.5". Certifying that Hugh S Jones has obtained a substitute to replace him for Military Duty.
3. February 4-Dated, William L. Marcy Autograph Letter Signed, "W. L. Marcy" as Secretary of State, one page, 7.25" x 5", Washington. Marcy makes an appointment for the Honorable D.J. Dickinson to meet with the President.

Samuel Tilden (1814-86) Reform Governor of New York, who lead the attack on the Tweed Ring, won the popular vote but lost the election in the disputed 1876 presidential election.
William Marcy Tweed (1823-78) NY politician who headed the infamous Tammany Hall organization known as the Tweed Ring; tried and found gulty of corruption, he escaped to Spain.
William L. Marcy (1786-1857) Member of the NY political group known as the "Albany Regency." He was Governor of NY, U.S. Secretary of War, and U.S Secretary of State. He coined the phrase "spoils system."
