Description
Four Hundred Dollars Reward! announces this striking, large broadside that pleads for the capture and return of two runaway slaves from Missouri. Published by a printer in Stewartsville, James W. Talbott of Easton, Buchanan County, Missouri solicits the return of two slaves who escaped the night of August 26, 1859.
James Washington Talbott was born in Kentucky in 1796 and moved to Easton, Missouri sometime in the 1850s. He established a successful farm and was also employed as a land surveyor. It is not currently known how many slaves worked on Talbott’s farm, but at least two of them, Ira and Silas, escaped in 1859 as the broadside indicates. Unfortunately, their fate is not known.
This original broadside, the largest runaway broadside we have handled, measures roughly 12” x 16.” It features a compelling mix of fonts and illustrations, most prominently an engraved caricature of a runaway slave with a bindle over his shoulder.
Museum-quality piece. The broadside is completely original, professionally lined after light conservation. A full conservation report is available upon request.
Stunning and sobering artifact of a time when chattel slavery flourished in the United States.
