Handwritten in 1847, this one-page return was prepared by a Constable from Morris Township regarding the prior month’s cases. According to the Constable, whose name appears to be “N.B. Elliott”, there were “…no deer killed out of season, no negro or mullatto slaves imported, no taverns or tippling houses…” among other offenses. Given that the constable was reporting on slave importation into his township as a potential violation of law, we suspect “Morris Township” to refer to Morris Township, New Jersey. More research may pinpoint the exact location and identity of the constable.
