Description
Four-page appraisal relating to the estate of William Ormsley, of Lincoln County, Kentucky. The document values eleven named slaves for the purpose of division amongst Ormsley’s heirs. The slaves include: Peg ($300), Harriet ($110), Matilda ($350), Mary ($325), Bass ($425), Rachel ($200), Jack ($400), Charles ($300), Ellen ($175), Grace ($225), and George ($175).
This harrowing document describes each of Ormsley’s heirs “drawing” the named slaves, a selection process where each got to choose a slave and was reimbursed funds by the estate depending on the value of the slave they chose. Undoubtedly, this led to the separation of family members and friends.
