Description
Two-page document, dated 1833, detailing an appraisal of slaves once owned by Presly Talbot of Bourbon County, Kentucky. Talbot's wife, Elizabeth Dickson (her re-married name), was ostensibly due a portion of her late husband's property and this appraisal was made to settle the estate.
Named "negro woman" Harriet is appraised at $400. Harriet's three children Levi, Lucinda, and Lewis are appraised at $150, $150, and $100, respectively. The document concludes that Elizabeth should receive Levi and Lucinda, her "dower of negroes," to cover what she is owed from Talbot's estate.
Devastating document that records a family torn apart.
