Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of powder blue, marigold, emerald, seafoam green, aubergine, and black atop a beige glaze ground, the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted to feature a central hexagon with concave sides surrounded by 6 semicircular shapes, all filled with intricate geometric, lattice, polka dot, and vegetal patterns. Abstract, linear decoration additionally embellishes the rim, while the exterior is coated in a lustrous, cream-hued glaze with lovely craquelure to areas. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 15.7" Diameter x 4.3" H (39.9 cm x 10.9 cm)
