Description
ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE HAND-PAINTED CERAMIC FIGURES, LOT OF FOUR, each on oval or rounded base with polychrome enamel decorations, comprising a "DICK WHITTINGTON" example featuring a man resting his right hand on a milestone with "IV / miLes / to / LONDON", a Duke of "Wellington" example holding a scroll in left hand and a pair of gloves in right, a "LOUIS NAPOLEON" example portraying him with left hand on hip and holding a hat in his right, and an example featuring a military figure on horseback, possibly Tsar Alexander II, with left hand on waist and right hand holding a pickelhaube-style hat. Unmarked. Second/third quarter 19th century. 11 1/2" to 16 1/2" HOA.
Two undamaged, except some having moderate crazing with minor expected enamel wear; Napoleon with some characteristic scattered hairlines; Wellington with some scattered hairlines, chip and two flakes to back base. Some having manufacturing flaws, including firing separations and Whittington with slightly concave base front, as made.
