Description

Light-horse Harry Lee to GWP Custis Shortly after GW’s Death Re: Address Given on the Same Topic

Henry Lee III (1756-1818) Autograph Letter Signed, February 16, [1800], Philadelphia, 1 p., 7.5" x 9.5".  Also includes a Free Frank sent to Custis at Mount Vernon and endorsed by him.  Framed with two plaques to an overall size of 27" x 23". Letter has usual mailing folds, not inspected out of frame, which has several areas of missing paint on gilding of frame.

Lee's correspondent George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857) was the grandson of Martha Washington and the step-grandson and adopted son of George Washington; his daughter Mary later married Henry Lee's son and future Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Henry Lee wrote to Custis, "Yr polite note accompanying yr handsome & feeling address to the youth of America was hereby rec'd. Its perusal gave me much pleasure. The sentiment which it breathes does honor to yr heart & I ardently pray a secular spirit may pervade the using generation throughout these states. I wish to have sent the paper to the press here but referring to yr letr I find no permission of that sort & therefore have confined my communication of it to my own circle."

Lee is perhaps most famous for his quote, "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen", these famous words were his eulogy on George Washington.
