Description

Harry Truman 3 Days After Entering Korean War Calls NY'ers "freedom-loving citizens" & Discusses "the course we have taken in extending assistance to the Republic of Korea."

A typed letter signed by President Truman to the Mayor of New York. 1p typed, measuring 6.875" x 8.75", Washington, D.C., dated June 30, 1950. Signed "Harry Truman" as President and addressed to Mayor William O'Dwyer. Typed on White House letterhead, thanking him for sending kind words from the city in response to support being sent to the Republic of Korea. Stamped on verso that it was received at the mayor's office on July 5th. Pencil notations at the top margin. The letter's original envelope has been stapled to the upper left corner. With flattened mail folds and a small amount of rust around the staple. Large, bold signature. Expected wear and soiling to the envelope. Very fine overall.

In full:
"I highly appreciate that fine message you sent me on behalf of the freedom-loving citizens of your great City. Your fullhearted expression of approval of the course we have taken in extending assistance to the Republic of Korea is very gratifying to me and I particularly want to thank you for your splendid pledge of support."

Three days prior to this letter being sent, President Harry Truman announced that he would be ordering U.S. air and naval forces to aid South Korea in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea that had taken place on June 25th. Despite concerns that doing so might reignite a cold war with Russia, the move to aid democratic South Korea was ultimately widely approved by Congress and the general public.
