Description

Martin Luther King Archive of Letters and Documents Related to Maude Ballou

A small group of letters, telegrams, and notes to Maude L. Ballou, dating from 1956 to 1963. Ballou had worked as personal secretary to Martin Luther King Jr. from 1955 to 1960. The group includes the following items:

Two Western Union Telegrams Addressed to Maude Ballou. Both measure 8" x 5.75", Montgomery, Alabama. The first is dated March 6, 1957, from Martin Luther King Jr. The telegram provides information on how to reach him in Gold Coast. The second is dated January 24, 1958, from Frank L. Stanley. Stanley requests that King be reached urgently in order to provide a statement for the Negro Press Anniversary.

Tom Malcolm.The Cross and The Cloud. Northampton: R.A. Slinn Ltd., circa 1957. 31pp, 5.5" x 8.5". A small volume of poems, with publisher's paper wraps. Accompanied by an envelope addressed to the Montgomery Improvement Association and postmarked July 5, 1957.

Gene Sharp Typed Letter Signed to Maude Ballou. 1p, 8.5" x 11", London, England, dated September 20, 1957. Signed "Gene Sharp" and addressed to Maude L. Ballou. Sharp writes about edits from Sir Stephen King-Hall's book that Dr. King was meant to review. 

Maude Ballou Autograph Note to Dr. King. 1p, measures 6" x 4", no place, dated September 18, 1956. A short note that reads: "Mr. Craig said the G____ will see you right away. He is waiting to take you and the committee there now."

Loyce Furman Cargile Autograph Postcard Signed. Measures 5.5" x 3.5", Liberia, no date. Signed "L.F.C." and addressed to Maude Ballou. A thank you note for a folder of December 16, 1956 items. Cargile goes on to praise the work of Dr. King in fighting social injustice.

Certificate of Donation. Measuring 4.5" x 3.25", Ahoskie, North Carolina, dated March 17, 1963. Aiding the Better Citizen's Club of Hertford County to celebrate the first anniversary of bringing to Ahoskie "the militant, Doctor Wyatt Tee Walker to Dr. Martin Luther King."

Two Note Cards of Random Notations. Both measuring 5" x 3".

The telegrams are creased through, with flattened folds. Light soiling, with wear and bumping to corners. The typed letter has flattened folds and light soiling. The poem volume is very good, with a small stain of rust at the back from a paper clip. The note cards and postcard have varying degrees of wear and soiling.
