Item Details
Description
James Buchanan Signed Bounty Land Grant to Tennessee Soldier written & partially printed on heavy parchment | James Buchanan 1860 US Land Grant to a War of 1812 Tennessee Veteran | A United States Military Bounty Land Grant issued to William Heddrick, Prvt, in Captain Hendrin's Company Tennessee Militia War of 1812 for 80 acres for his service in the War of 1812 in accordance with federal Congressional law dated March 3, 1855, partially printed document on heavy parchment | Approx. Dimensions: 10" H x 15.75" W | Secretarially signed by James Buchanan, President of the United States, Secretary J. A. Leonard, and J. N. Granger, Recorder of the General Land Office, October 1, 1860 | Bounty land grants in honor of military service to the United States were given to soldiers or their descendants to reward service between the Revolutionary War until March 1855. The grants were not passed out to everyone. Soldiers or their descendants had to file papers with the government to qualify for a bounty warrant, which could be either exchanged for a plot of land or sold to another party, which would exchange the warrant for a plot of land. In this case, Private Heddrick was awarded Warrant #5918, who then sold the warrant to Francis B. Webster. The land grant shown here was the official transfer of the plot from the federal government to the assignees | What makes this particular land grant both unusual and important is that it was issued to a soldier in the Tennessee militia who most likely fought with General (later President) Andrew Jackson in Florida and later the Battle of New Orleans, which ended the War of 1812.
