Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Washkuk area, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine low-fired ceramic mask, perhaps of an ancestor, of an ovoid form with intricate features in relief. Each protruding eye is decorated with two small piercings and flank the bulbous nose, with thin lips, incised curvilinear striations, and a pair of bulging nodules on either side of the forehead. The periphery is lined with dozens of small striations. Size: 3.5" W x 4.5" H (8.9 cm x 11.4 cm); 6.8" H (17.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Minor nicks and abrasions to peripheries and some raised features, with light softening to some incised details, fire-darkened patches on the verso, and a couple of stable hairline fissures, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
