Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Maprik district, Abelam peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask plaque meant to be shown in celebration of the annual yam harvest. The ovoid mask features narrow triangular eyes within a yellow facial panel, a black-painted mouth enclosed with a ring of white and red, and a beard with white serrations below the tapered chin. Above and below the mask are projecting spade-shaped panels with pointed tips, the top with a radiant red triangle in the middle, and the bottom with broad strokes of red and white. Size: 6.2" W x 20.625" H (15.7 cm x 52.4 cm)
Provenance: private Reynolds collection, Springfield, Missouri, USA, purchased from Mac Laren Markowitz Gallery (former owner from 1989-2004)

Nicks and abrasions to pigment on obverse, otherwise intact and very good. Great remains of pigment on obverse. Mounted with modern loop screws and wire on verso for mounting purposes.
