Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, probably Gulf Province, Tovei Village, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. Sizeable to say the least, an expressive dance mask woven from plant fibers, the body presenting an attractive diagonal striated pattern, with attached arms ending in extended fingers, and a sago leaf skirt attached below the wooden ring that serves as the base of the figure. The head is zoomorphic but definitely abstract, also made of woven fiber, with applied eyes and an open beak or pointed mouth as well as Cassowary feathers adorning the visage. A mesmerizing example. Size: 35.5" W x 62.5" H (90.2 cm x 158.8 cm)
Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
