Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik, Abelam, early 20th century CE. A hand-painted and finely woven vegetal fiber mask boasting a characteristically bold features such as large spiraled eyes, conical ears, a prominent nasal ridge with a loop at the end for suspending ornaments, and a curled headdress/coiffure atop, with patterns in red, black, and white pigments. A strong example created for use in festivals surrounding the cherished yam, the crucial crop of the Abelam people who live in the Maprik district of northeast Papua New Guinea. Size: 9" W x 14.25" H (22.9 cm x 36.2 cm)
Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

Condition
Slight bending to overall form of some walls, nose, and upper crest, with fading to areas of exterior pigmentation, and minor loosening to some base fibers, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall form.
