Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik, Abelam, early 20th century CE. A hand-painted and finely woven vegetal fiber mask boasting a characteristically bold visage of large spiraled eyes and a pronounced nose/beak, with red and white surviving pigments. A strong example, probably created for use in festivals surrounding the yam, the crucial crop of the Abelam people who live in the Maprik district. Loop for suspension. Size: 12" L x 4.125" W (30.5 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
