Oceania, Indonesia, New Guinea, Huon Gulf / Geelvinck Bay (Cenderawasih Bay), ca. 1900 CE. Very attractive ancestor figure (korwar) carved from a single piece of wood - now with wonderful old patina. Squatting figure holds ceremonial open-work object between both hands, head resting on its upper section. Korwar figures often exemplify the distinctive approach to depicting the human form of the people of New Guinea. This figure would have been kept by the family and consulted during crises. If its advice was good, the figure would be venerated - but if was wrong, the figure could be harmed. Size: 5" W x 16" H (12.7 cm x 40.6 cm)
