Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Lampung, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare and well preserved ceremonial mat known as a lampit, woven from rattan. Split slats are laid flat in tight rows, their ends plaited and woven together with additional rattan strips. The surface is pyro-engraved, lightly scorched to depict stylized boats and birds around a sunburst motif. Lampits are woven by men and used as floor mats to sit on during special events and stored and passed down through generations. The mat is mounted on a modern cotton textile stretched over a wood frame, ready to display! Size of mat: 24.3" L x 23.25" W (61.7 cm x 59.1 cm); frame: 25" L x 24" W (63.5 cm x 61 cm)
