Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of flat pottery figures, both decorated with applied strips of pottery, in the form of standing nude women with scarification marks (cicatrices) on their shoulders. Both have emphasized genitalia and stand in almost identical poses, with their arms out to their sides. They also both have necklaces and headdresses as their only ornamentation. They are part of the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition, made to be placed into graves. Who do these figures represent - the dead? Mourners? Goddesses? Size of largest: 8" H (20.3 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
