Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine pair of two hand-built pottery figures of flat forms known as gingerbread figures. The first figure is a standing female who wears a knee-length skirt and holds a piriform jar atop her left shoulder. She has slit eyes and lips flanked by drooping ears, and her headdress is fronted with an upturned shamanic horn. The largest figure stands with a broad stance, holds conical arms out from massive shoulders, and wears a necklace with large 'beads.' The elongated head exhibits semicircular ears and a thick headband above a prominent nose and perforated ear lobes. Size of largest: 5.125" W x 6.375" H (13 cm x 16.2 cm)
Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Condition
Figure with jar has small chips to headdress as shown. Both figures have minor nicks to limbs and heads, otherwise intact and very good. Great root marks throughout.
