Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery figure of a charming form shown holding a petite puppy under the left arm. The figure stands with delineated legs atop arched feet, and the thighs and lower abdomen are decorated with incised pairs of intersecting linear stripes. Coffee bean shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, and a miniscule mouth constitute the minimalist countenance beneath a thick-brimmed headband, and the entire figure is enveloped with a layer of white pigment. Size: 3.4" W x 7.625" H (8.6 cm x 19.4 cm)
Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to 1990s; ex-Roger Peterson collection

Condition
Original dog tail missing. Nicks and abrasions to limbs, dog, body, and head, with softening to some finer details, and fading to white pigment on obverse, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout and remains of pigment across obverse.
