Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of hand-built pottery figures of characteristically flat forms that are known colloquially as 'gingerbread' figures. The first figure is of a light orange color and wears three bangles on each elbow, drop-form ear ornaments, and an impressed headband with lengthy lappets draped atop the clavicle. The taller figure is of a burnt ochre hue and dons solid elbow bangles, a bolo-style necklace, conical earrings, and a thick-brimmed hat. Both figures hold bent arms out to their sides and display faint remains of dark linear motifs along the front of their legs. Size of largest (burnt ochre): 4.4" W x 8.1" H (11.2 cm x 20.6 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

Light orange figure has repairs to proper right arm at elbow as well as proper left lappet along back of head, each with light adhesive residue along break lines; taller figure is intact and very good. Both figures have light encrustations, fading to dark linear motifs on obverse sides, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits and great root marks throughout.
