Description
**Originally Listed At $350**
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala style, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A characteristically abstract anthropomorphic figure, hand-carved and string-cut from a rich green stone (probably diorite) with appealing stylization. The axe god displays an ovular head with a tall bridged nose, bent arms resting across a broad chest, a narrow waist, and two nub-shaped legs. The figure also features round eyes, an ovular mouth, and delineations between arms and legs, all showing remains of delineation via burnt-orange pigment. This form conveys how ancient artisans from this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to simple, eloquent forms via a string cut technique; over time, the dramatic lines of string-cut details have faded and smoothed to a contiguous wavy appearance. Size: 1.5" L x 1.875" W x 5.625" H (3.8 cm x 4.8 cm x 14.3 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
