Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two tall ceramic female figures, one seated and one standing. Both are "sheepface" with their faces dominated by long, snout-like noses. The standing figure has heavy applied dots on her shoulders, thought to indicate ritual scarification, perhaps a mark of status or family affiliation. The seated figure has what looks like a drum on her lap and holds something else in her upturned hand - perhaps another musical instrument. Both are from the shaft tomb culture and were made to be placed into burials. Size of largest: 5.05" W x 9.85" H (12.8 cm x 25 cm)
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
