Description
**Originally Listed At $450**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Three lovely standing pottery figures, hand-built from terracotta and covered in deep-red slip. Two of the figures exhibit classic "sheepface" characteristics, such as conical noses, thin mouths, pointed ears with circular earspools, and coffee-bean-shaped eyes, while the third figure depicts more-naturalistic features. The sheepface figures stand on attenuated limbs, and display white-painted embellishments around their chests, foreheads, legs, and faces. Each sheepface also has a tall forehead with an extravagant headband, one displaying a painted crosshatch pattern, and the other a dual set with a projecting conical crest. The third, non-sheepface figure has similar body features as the other two, but her face depicts a more serene and finely-sculpted visage with a large head cover on top. All three figures are fabulous effigies from this ancient Mesoamerican culture! Size of largest (sheepface w/ double headband): 9" H (22.9 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
