Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A tall pair of hand-built terracotta standing figures, one male and the other female, each with characteristic "sheepface" facial details typical of some Jalisco pottery examples. The male figure has attenuated limbs, holds a stone-shaped item in one hand, and has delineated genitalia. His face has a protruding nose, offset ovoid eyes, pointed ears, and a tall conical head with two circular headbands. The taller female figure displays similarly-attenuated limbs, hunched shoulders, and prominent breasts. Her large head presents large oval-shaped eyes, a thin mouth curved into a slight smile, and a tall forehead with two elaborately-incised headbands. Both figures have a deep red-orange painted ground, with all surface details in opaque white. A lovely duo of shaft-tomb figural pottery statues! Size of tallest figure (female): 10.7" H (27.2 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
