Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A striking "sheepface" pottery figure depicting a seated male figure assuming a ritualistic pose as if in the midst of a solemn ceremony, with his right leg tucked under his raised left leg, his left hand placed upon his upraised left knee, and right hand placed upon his right thigh. Elaborately decorated, this gent dons a tall headdress, large round openwork ear ornaments, a single-shoulder strapped shield or garment that covers his left upper arm, a white painted loin cloth, leg and hand coverings. Overall slip painted red with all ornaments as well as his shield finely painted with white slip embellishments. Quite a strong sheep-faced figure from this shaft tomb culture, very striking! Size: 4.75" W x 8.5" H (12.1 cm x 21.6 cm)

Condition
Old, stable crack to shield and small old fissure to hairband. Head reattached and normal surface wear commensurate with age. Nice manganese deposits on surface!
