Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a fine example of a shaft tomb figurine from the mysterious Nayarit of West Mexico; it is a hollow figure, with red slip on his lower body and clear genitalia. He has large ears -- possibly extended by ornaments -- and wears a ringed object that could be interpreted as a hat or a headband. He is seated in a naturalistic pose with his arms crossed over his knees and a look on his face that suggests intense observation. This figure is one that clearly reminds us that the Modernist artists in the past century were inspired by these ancient sculptures. Size: 4.9" L x 3.65" W x 6.2" H (12.4 cm x 9.3 cm x 15.7 cm)
