Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
Pre-Columbian, Guerrero, Mexico, Mezcala style, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. Hand-carved and string-cut from a rich green stone (probably diorite), a relatively large standing anthropomorphic figure, the human physiognomy displaying appealing stylization. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to simple, eloquent forms via a string cut technique. Note the dramatically oversized angular head, the arms tucked in close to the body, separation between the legs, and abstract facial features that ironically appeal to a modernist taste for minimalism. Custom stand. Size: 2.5" W x 5.25" H (6.4 cm x 13.3 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on stand
For similar examples see, Carlos Gay, MEZCALA: Ancient Stone Sculpture from Guerrero, Mexico; Balsas Publications, Geneva, 1992, pp. 46- 47.
Provenance: private Alan Long, New York City, USA collection
