Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero Region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. Hand carved and string-cut from a rich greenstone, an abstract anthropomorphic figure, closest to type M-10, standing with bifurcated legs and string-cut arms at sides with a characteristically oversized head, deeply undercut neck, projecting lower jaw, and square torso. The figure's visage is wonderfully minimalist with facial planes just barely suggesting eyes, nose, and open mouth. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to differentiate facial features and limbs. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to simple, eloquent forms via this string cut technique. The result ironically appeals to a modernist taste for minimalism. Mezcala sculptural works are equally appealing for the inherent beauty of the stones selected by the ancients.
